Have you longed to introduce color to your home, but were afraid to add it to the walls? Or have you already painted everything you can, and still want more? Maybe you’re like us, with kids who love to change the look of their room almost every single day. Then you’re going to love the Philips hue, a fantastic and fun addition to the “smart home” trend, where you control light settings and color schemes from an app on your phone. But I’m getting ahead of myself….let me tell you from the beginning.
Our world has gone technology crazy, from mobile devices to the apps that inhabit them, we love our gadgets. The next natural progression seems to be the “Internet of Things,” or, as I like to call it, always connected. One of the most quickly advancing trends is the “smart home” phenomenon, where you connect your appliances, lights, water faucets, television to apps on your phone. You can preheat your oven on your drive home from work. You can set your air conditioning to cool down your house as you drive home from soccer practice. Fantastic!
Leading the charge is Best Buy, who is writing a Connected Home Story for all of us, starting with the easy-to-install and even easier to use Philips hue A-19 Starter Kit and the hue Go personal wireless smart lights. Oh, it’s a thing.
The starter kit comes with three bulbs and a “bridge,” which is a fun little gadget that connects your bulbs and accessory lights with your Wi-Fi to make the whole thing work.
Once you’ve downloaded the hue app onto your iOS or Android device, you simply hit the big ‘ol button in the middle, and it does all the sync-ing for you, connecting your Wi-Fi and your phone, so you can now enjoy all the crazy goodness of this whole new world.
Philips hue for Home on Deranged
Once you install the app, you can see it comes with all kinds of default settings: deep sea, ski, beach, sunset, and more. You can adjust the colors, the timers, the alerts and lots more, right from your phone or mobile device. Heck, you can even set up an automatic schedule for when you leave town, so from the outside, it still looks like you’re home.
But the next part, for us, was the best part. We opted to install the bulbs in the girls’ bedroom. The app detects each individual bulb. What??? You can see above, they are clearly labeled, with numbers 2 and 4 being designated as the bulbs above Annie and Leelou’s beds. Fantastic! Since Leelou wanted blue, and Annie wanted pink, easy-peasy, that’s what they get.
Then, Thomas put in distinct settings for the room, with the hue lights working with the Go light, a portable, completely wire free smart light that adds some versatility to your options. Thomas programmed in a “reading” setting, a “sleepy time” setting, and more. You can see 3 of our selections below, plus one that is more for an adult, living room style.
Pink might not be your cup of tea, but Annie loves it! She’s learned which button to push on Thomas’ phone to make it happen. And you can see for yourself below, Leelou enjoyed telling me exactly which setting she liked best.
Alright, so what else do you need to know?
- The hue’s White & Color Ambiance starter kit is way cool, and works with the Apple HomeKit, if you are an iOS user. And whether you use iOS or Android, there are a ton of 3rd party apps that can do some crazy cool lighting things in your home.
- The hue Go is totally portable, so move it where it suits you best. When Thomas reads to the girls, he likes it pointed away from him. I like it pointed toward me, so I just move it where I need it. No more fighting over the lamp!
- Easy to install, according to Thomas. You can also program it to give you gradually increasing light intensity in the mornings. Better to wake up from a soothing sunrise than an angry beeping alarm clock!
- All the hue lights work together, so each time you add new ones to your home, they automatically sync up with the other ones. You can even create a hue account to access your lights remotely by app or Web browser.
One of the keys to make it all work is your Wi-Fi. You need to avoid the “dead zones” that can occur in your house, especially if you have tons of connected devices like we do. Solution? Netgear® Nighthawk™ DST Router and DST Adapter with Geek Squad included – new and exclusively at Best Buy.
This is a brand new router that was exclusively developed between Netgear and Best Buy to provide an easy, all-in-one solution to support your home’s connected devices. The more Wi-Fi dependent devices you have in your home, the more strain on your home’s network, especially the router. Most of us experience slow Wi-Fi, dropped calls, or experience “dead zones” – which could be improved upon with an “AC” router, Wi-Fi extenders and expert help.
I love the DST – “Dead Spot Terminator” – adapter. How awesome is it to be able to eliminate those pesky dead zones for yourself? Since our main router is in the office on one side of the house, Thomas put this adapter in the living room, which is much closer to the girls’ room. The awesome byproduct is that it has improved the Wi-Fi for all our devices. And with Geek Squad set up and support available on the phone or the web, you can get help 24/7.
I could talk about the awesomeness that is the product for days. We can’t wait to get more to fashion our own bedroom. I would LOVE to have the gentle dimming awake thing. Would definitely get my day off to a better start! Check it out for yourself, and jump in and have fun!
