It might seem strange to eat chili in the middle of summer, but if you love a good corn chip chili pie (chili, cheese and onions, oh my!) you wouldn’t question it. But with fall and winter temperatures finally finding their way down here to Texas, the Wolf® Brand Chili cans are heading right out of the pantry and into our bellies. Today, I’m sharing a recipe with a whole lot of options – because busy families need options! – and the clever folks at Wolf® Brand Chili are kindly sponsoring this post so I can bring it to you!
Alright, you all know that I’m not the handiest gal in the kitchen. But I can follow a recipe. Or re-make a recipe, if need be. Thankfully, our girls aren’t as picky as some toddlers when it comes to mealtime, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t like to have options. Wolf® Brand Chili gives us options. First off, they have different kinds of chili: mild, hot, lean, turkey and home style, each with a beans or no beans version. And there’s a hot dog sauce to boot, which we’ve used for our backyard cookouts, especially at Fourth of July.
If you’ve never tried it, I’m just going to tell you this: Wolf® Brand Chili is delicious! It does have a bold flavor, but the balance is just right, so it suits the tastebuds of me and my husband. You can just make it a one-dish meal, and you’ll have fun Texas-style seasonings on your plate that all chili lovers admire. Ever been to a chili cook-off? It’s that good!
Wolf® Brand Chili Cheese Tater Tot Casserole
I preface this recipe by saying that it started out as Wolf® Brand Turkey Chili Cheese Fries. But once Thomas and I got cooking in the kitchen, we decided to take it one step further to casserole form. So here’s what we did:
- 2 cans Wolf® Brand Chili, any flavor
- 2 pounds ground turkey
- 2 pound bag of tater tots
- 4 cups shredded cheese
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (we used garlic herb)
- tbsp mayonnaise
- optional: cheese sauce
1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. You’ll need a 9×13 cooking dish.
2. Brown the turkey in the skillet. Add breadcrumbs and mayo. You can add or subtract, depending on your taste buds.
3. Add the Wolf® Brand Chili to the turkey. This allows the turkey to absorb the flavor of the chili. Simmer uncovered for 10 minutes.
4. You can also add the cheese sauce at this point, up to half a jar, depending on taste.
5. Pour the turkey/Wolf® Brand Chili mixture into the baking dish.
6. Place a layer of shredded cheese over the mixture, enough so that the chili is covered.
7. Arrange a layer of tater tots over the cheese.
8. Bake in preheated oven for 25-30 minutes.
Toddler and Family Approved
This meal was a huge hit with our toddlers! The 3 year old ate her entire serving and then asked for more! The 2 year old loved the tater tots and scooping up more Wolf® Brand Chili onto them. This is why we are so loyal to the brand: Wolf® Brand Chili makes all our homemade favorites better, since we love to add it to macaroni ‘n cheese for a quick meal, or, of course, get a yum on with the Frito chili pie. And since the girls love hot dogs, we make chili cheese dogs, and did I mention the chili cheese fries and chili burritos?
Make it your recipe!
If you want, you could add sliced carrots, diced tomatoes, onions, even corn, if you like having vegetables in your casserole. And remember when I said it was supposed to be chili cheese fries? You can take the Wolf® Brand Chili, add some hot dogs/turkey dogs to it, pour it over some french fries, bake it in the oven, sprinkle some cheese on top, and you’ve got a Texas original you will love!
And since this recipe easily made enough servings for 10 Texans, we got creative with leftovers. One particular night, after we picked up fresh tortillas at the grocery store, Thomas reheated part of the casserole in the oven. We then loaded up our tortillas for a delicious Wolf® Brand Chili slightly Tex-Mex meal. And I later realized we could have had it for breakfast one morning as a breakfast burrito and/or taquito, whichever name you prefer.
Yes, it’s true, Texans do tend to brag. But I don’t mind bragging on an authentic chili expert like Wolf® Brand Chili, because they started in Texas (in a town only about 30 minutes from where we live!) and only make chili. And they would LOVE to see your recipes. They want to uncover the bold, original way you are using Wolf® Brand Chili, so visit their Facebook page and share your pictures and recipes!
